More People, More Active, More Often.
The Active Schools/Sports Development Team functions as part of Education Services with a specific remit for promoting physical activity and sport to all young people in local schools and all Inverclyde residents in the wider community.
The team is managed by an Active Schools & Sport Development Manager and consists of a full-time complement of Active Schools Co-ordinators, a Football Development Officer, a Community Sport Hub Development Officer, a Rugby Club Development Officer, a School Sport Competition Officer and a P.E. Lead Officer.
Active Schools is a term given to all schools in Scotland that provide pupils with sufficient opportunities to get active to the extent that it makes a positive contribution to their health. The role of our Active Schools Co-ordinators is essentially to provide opportunities for young people to become ‘more active, more often’. Our Sports Development Officers provide Inverclyde people with sport specific opportunities by introducing new skills and/or further developing particular sports. Our School Sport Competition Officer provides the opportunity for pupils to compete in structured competitons in various sports. Our Community Sports Hub Officer works with identifed local clubs to support each clubs own development and also developing more joined up working together by clubs.
As a team, we aim to promote pathways for young people, which allows them to engage in physical activity and sport from Education setting and into the local community in the hope that our young people continue healthy lifestyles into adult-life.
A key to the success of the team is partnership working with local schools to support Senior staff memebers and their staff, whilst working closely with pupils and their parents. The team also recruit, train and mentor coaches (mainly volunteers) from the local community who have an interest in particular types of activity/sport and who wish to encourage young people through the provision of clubs outwith the formal curriculum.
Inverclyde Council and sportscotland jointly fund the Active Schools/Sports Development Team. Funding is also received from the Scottish Football Association and Greenock Wanders Rugby Club.
Our team contributes to the overall progression of each school in achieving Health Promoting School status. Some examples of the positive work undertaken by the Active Schools/Sports Development team include:
