Kirn Drive Consultation (Non Statutory)

Improvements to Kirn Drive and Staffa Street

A petition was created on Inverclyde Council's website on 12 January 2020 calling on the Council to make Kirn Drive, Gourock a one-way system running east to west (westbound). The petition gathered in excess of 100 signatures within the publication period and was heard by the Petitions Committee on 19 March 2020 for consideration. Traffic surveys were undertaken in March 2023 to collect traffic data on the study network. This data included junction turning counts, automated traffic counts (ATC) and parking surveys. The ATC data shows that there are approximately 50% more vehicles travelling westbound on Kirn Drive than there are eastbound.

The Roads Authority proposes to promote a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to make Kirn Drive one-way westbound between Arran Road and Divert Road as well as Staffa Street southbound between Ivy Crescent and Kingsway East.

Issues with the current layout

  • Conflict points along Kirn Drive
  • Congestion at peak times
  • Increased journey times
  • ‘rat runs’ to avoid area increasing traffic volume on other routes

Benefits of the Proposals

  • Significant improvement to journey times
  • Little delay and no congestion predicted
  • Traffic calming will reduce speeds and improve road safety

The Next Step

  • Present findings of consultation to the Environmental and Regeneration Committee
  • Progress to statutory consultations for one-way and traffic calming
  • **Construction and implementation

** Can only be progressed upon completion of the statutory consultation process.
