Employment References

Local Government

The preferred candidate for appointment will normally be required to provide references from their two most recent employers before they can start working with us.

The referees will be expected to hold positions of responsibility and be familiar with your work and good character. This, in most circumstances, will be your line manager or supervisor. References from colleagues, relatives or personal friends will not be accepted.

If you are unable to provide an employer reference for reason of unemployment or where your employer no longer exists, you are asked to name referees who are able to verify your good character. School or college leavers should give a head teacher or college principal as their first referee.

Candidates should note that, in line with our safe recruitment practices, we reserve the right to contact any previous employer for information, whether named as a referee or not.

Please ensure you provide full and up-to-date contact details of all referees (including an up to date email address), that you have sought their permission to be used as a referee, and that you have alerted them that they may receive a request. This will ensure that we receive your references as quickly as possible and avoid any unnecessary delays in confirming your appointment.

References will normally only be taken up if you are the preferred candidate for appointment in order to the support the Selection Panel’s decision. If you do not wish referees to be contacted prior to interview, please ensure you indicate this by ticking the appropriate box on the application form. Please note that once you have confirmed that you have accepted the post Human Resources will contact your referees almost immediately through our automated system.
