The Photographic Collections held at the Museum span some 150 years of Inverclyde's history and record many now vanished streets and locations. As such it is an unequalled record of the many changes the area has gone through and documents the industries and activities of local people as well as leisure, educational and other pursuits.

Of particular note is the Paterson Collection of Clyde shipping photographs which documents the ships and piers on the Clyde from the earliest days of photography. Paddle steamers, cargo ships, ships on trial, warships and many others appear in the collection as does an extensive series of images of Clyde piers and anchorages.
