Under 35 rule

Are you 25 to 34 years old and live alone in self contained accommodation?

Since 1 January 2012 Housing Benefit is restricted to a Shared Accommodation Rate for single people under the age of 35 if they live alone in self-contained accommodation.

Your Housing Benefit will be restricted to a Shared Accommodation Rate if all of the following apply to you:

  • You live alone in self-contained accommodation, and
  • You rent from a private landlord, and
  • You do not qualify for an exemption from a Shared Accommodation Rate

If your Housing Benefit is worked out using an LHA rate, the Shared Accommodation Rates that apply in Inverclyde from 1st April are shown under Related links on this page. You can find Shared Accommodation Rates for previous years under External links on this page.
