Community council candidates sought
CANDIDATES are being sought to represent Greenock West and Cardwell Bay Community Council.
An interim election for the community council has been called following the loss of two members taking the quota below the minimum requirement of five.
Candidates have until 4pm on Friday 28 February 2025 to register.
If there are more candidates than there are vacancies an election will be held.
Greenock West and Cardwell Bay Community Council was re-established following the Inverclyde-wide Community Council Elections in 2024 but it has since lost two community councillors due to one relocating outwith the area and another being elected to Inverclyde Council preventing them from standing as a community councillor at the same time.
Councillor Paul Cassidy, Inverclyde Council’s community council champion, said: “Greenock West and Cardwell Bay is a vibrant area and has traditionally been supported by a strong and vocal community council.

“People’s personal circumstances can understandably change and that’s why we are now in a position where new members are needed to ensure this important community council can continue.
“Community councils can and do make a difference to the communities they serve, and I urge people from Greenock West and Cardwell Bay to come forward and represent their community council and work constructively with Inverclyde Council to address any concerns and explore opportunities for further improvements.”
Inverclyde has 11 community councils: Gourock; Greenock Central; Greenock East; Greenock Southwest; Greenock West and Cardwell Bay; Holefarm and Cowdenknowes; Inverkip and Wemyss Bay; Kilmacolm and Quarriers Village; Larkfield, Braeside and Branchton; Port Glasgow East; and Port Glasgow West.
There are also currently no community councils formed in the Greenock Central and the Holefarm and Cowdenknowes areas.
Councillor Cassidy said: “While the main priority at this moment in time is securing enough support for Greenock West and Cardwell Bay Community Council to be re-established, our other community councils also need support from local residents to either form or continue to operate and serve the best interests of residents.
“I know from experience of having previously served as a community councillor the positive impact community councils and their members can have and we, as a council, value the important feedback received from them.
“That’s why we need candidates to come forward for Greenock West and Cardwell Bay Community Council in the first instance but also for greater representation in other areas to help make a real difference to communities across Inverclyde.”
Community councils are the third tier of government, bridging the gap between communities, council and national governments.
They play an important role in towns and villages across Scotland.
