Summer Reading Challenge Celebration at Greenock Town Hall
Hundreds of children booked in for a special celebration of reading at Inverclyde Council’s annual Summer Reading Celebration event.
The evening, which was held in Greenock Town Hall, takes place every year to celebrate the achievements of the hundreds of children who take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.
Children across the authority were encouraged to take part by reading six books – or more – over the school summer holidays. This year’s theme was Ready, Set, Read! and celebrated sports and games.
Almost 900 children took part with more than 500 completing the challenge. It was part of an overall fantastic response to Inverclyde Libraries’ summer events programme for children and families.
Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “The Summer Reading Celebration is always a fantastic event and it was great to see so many children and their families enjoying it.
“We’ve really seen a fantastic response to this year’s challenge and to the Inverclyde Libraries summer events programme for children and families.
“Our celebration in Greenock Town hall is always a great way to round off the reading challenge and celebrate the achievements of all the young people who took part.
“I’d like to congratulate everyone involved, and our libraries service for once again organising a successful summer programme.”
Parents gave positive feedback on the reading programme with one saying it brought them closer together and another said: "All the children enjoyed the reading challenge and love the library in general. The staff are always great and feel so at home in the library."
Children and their families who attended the evening were treated to an evening of storytelling entertainment from Macastory.
The Summer Reading Challenge is delivered locally by Inverclyde Council’s libraries service in partnership with organisers The Reading Agency and ran from June 24 to August 26.
It is aimed at children aged four to 11 years old who received a sticker booklet, mini-frisbee, medal, certificate, and an invitation to the celebration event.
