Huge crowds enjoy fun in the sun at the Comet Festival
HUGE crowds of people turned out for some fun in the sun at the 2023 Comet Festival in Port Glasgow.
The annual event took place at Coronation Park on Saturday (24 June 2023) where visitors enjoyed the various stalls, funfair, inflatables, live music, children’s activities, dancing, birds of prey, and food and drink tents.
Opening the festival were new gala king and queen Cooper Deegan and Jessica Wilson, who are both pupils at Newark Primary, accompanied by Provost Drew McKenzie.
There event was busy throughout the day with families and people of all ages as they enjoyed the entertainment which was complemented by the warm and sunny weather.
Provost McKenzie said: “It was a truly wonderful day and great to see so many familiar faces and many new ones as well.
“The Comet Festival has been for as long as I can remember a firm and favourite fixture in the Port Glasgow and indeed the Inverclyde events calendar.
“I was delighted to help open the event and welcome the new gala king Cooper and gala queen Jessica and they were a credit to themselves, their families, and their schools.

“The Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow sculpture has become an additional feature of the festival as the newest addition to the park and it was a pleasure to help officially launch the magnificent artwork prior to the start of the festival. It was an extra-special day of celebration for Port Glasgow and Inverclyde as a whole.”
The event was organised by the Comet Festival Committee with support from Inverclyde Council and was part of the Meliora Festival once again this year.
The festival was on from around 11.45am until 6pm with entertainment throughout the day.
