More recycling options in place at Craigmuschat Quarry

Residents will be able to dispose of their cooking oil safely thanks to new dedicated recycling bins.

Three new cooking oil bins are now in place at Craigmushcat Quarry Recycling Centre in Gourock to urge residents to get rid of their oil safely. Cooking oil should never be poured down a drain as it can cause blockages but instead should be poured into a container and brought to the dedicated bins.

Convener of Environment and Regeneration, Councillor Michael McCormick, said: “It was good to visit Craigmuschat and see the development of the recycling centre with more dedicated bins and areas making it easier for residents to recycle.

“As well as these new cooking oil bins, there is an engine oil tank on site as well as an area for fridges.

“I hope this encourages people across Inverclyde to keep doing what they can to cut down on waste and recycle properly. If we all continue to do our bit then it will go a long way towards reaching our recycling targets.”

Craigmuschat Quarry Recycling Centre became a dedicated recycling-only centre at the start of October. It has facilities to allow residents to dispose of mixed recyclates (everything that goes in your blue bin), garden waste, wood, cardboard, glass, hard plastics, textiles, scrap metal, soil, rubble, sofas, chairs and small electrical items. There is also a bin to dispose of engine oil and a hard plastics container.

Pottery Street Recycling Centre in Greenock also has facilities to allow residents to dispose of mixed recyclates, garden waste, wood, cardboard, glass, plastics, textiles, electrical items, fridges and washing machines, soil, rubble, oils and paint, as well as general household waste.

From October 1, both sites moved to winter opening hours of 8am to 6pm, seven days a week, with last entry 15 minutes before closing.

Across Inverclyde, brown bin garden waste collections came to an end in November and will restart in March 2024. You can continue to recycle your garden waste at the recycling centres.

Residents are also encouraged to recycle their unwanted or out-of-date food using the green household food waste containers, which are collected every fortnight alongside black bins.

Textiles such as old clothes can also be recycled at both recycling centres.
