Drug death figures 2023

Latest figures published today, Tuesday 22 August 2023, by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) show that 29 people died from drug-related deaths in Inverclyde in 2022 – up from 16 in 2021.

Commenting on the figures, Councillor Francesca Brennan, convener of Inverclyde’s Social Work and Social Care Scrutiny Panel, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who have died.

“It should never be forgotten that each death represents someone’s son, daughter, partner, relative, or friend and, as such, each death is a tragedy.

“While it is disappointing that the death rate locally has gone up, we have always said that the process of reversing the trend won’t happen overnight and our services are working hard alongside partner agencies to identify and support those in our community who need help.

“A lot of good work is being done and there is support available for anyone out there who is struggling with drug or alcohol dependency and I would urge them to seek help as soon as possible.”
