Comment on latest drug deaths figures
Commenting on the figures published today by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) which show 16 people died from drug-related deaths in Inverclyde in 2021 – down from 33 in 2020, Councillor Colin Jackson, convener of Inverclyde Council’s Social Work & Social Care Scrutiny Panel, said: “This is no cause for celebration. It remains the case and always will be the case that every death is a tragedy and represents the loss of someone’s family or friend.
“While we have seen a significant drop in drug-related deaths from 33 to 16 and while there is a lot of hard work going on in our community from council/HSCP services through the Inverclyde Alcohol and Drug Partnership and partner organisations, the problem will not be fixed until there have been no deaths.
“In order to do that we need increased and sustained investment in resources beyond what has already been committed and continued focus on the key issues at the root of the problem to allow us to deliver the support our residents need and prevent any more unnecessary drug-related deaths.”
The number of drug-related deaths in Inverclyde is at its lowest level since 2015 when 16 people sadly lost their lives.
The five-year average is also down one per cent from 36.7 to 35.7 per 100,000 population.
Cllr Jackson said: “A lot of work still needs to be done and we’ve said all along that it will take time to turn the tide on this national epidemic but rest-assured that our services and staff are working hard behind the scenes to identify and support those in our community who need it.
“The message is clear to anyone out there who is struggling with drugs or alcohol or to anyone who knows someone who is struggling: you are not alone, help is available.”
