Inverclyde to Fly the Flag in Honour of Armed Forces
Inverclyde Council will join local authorities across the country by hosting a short ‘Flying the Flag’ ceremony on Monday 25th June to mark Armed
Forces Day.
Provost Martin Brennan and other civic representatives will join the Depute Lord Lieutenant Mr Alastair MacMillan in Greenock’s Clyde Square where prayers and a minute’s silence will be held before the flag is raised.
Provost Brennan said: “In the year marking the centenary of the end of World War One it is even more important that we come together to mark Armed Forces Day to recognise the service and tradition of the armed forces and to show our support for them.
“Inverclyde has always had a strong link with the armed forces and we still send men and women into harm’s way to protect our rights and freedoms that were so dearly earned in the past.
“This is an opportunity for us all to show our support for the men and women of all ages who make up the armed forces community – including veterans and cadets – and to recognise their outstanding contribution to this country.”
The Armed Forces Day Flag raising ceremony will take place on Monday 25 June 2018 at 10.30am in Clyde Square, Greenock. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Provost Brennan will also be attending a joint Armed Forces Day service with Renfrewshire Council and East Renfrewshire councils being held in Paisley Abbey Saturday 23 June at 10am.
UK commemorations take place on Armed Forces Day itself – Saturday 30 June 2018.
