the near future.

The Policy & Resources Committee has approved a proposal that from October it can be used for civil ceremonies while awaiting a report on the potential to make the renovated historic District Court a permanent marriage venue.

Convener and Council Leader Councillor Stephen McCabe said: “It is a prestigious location and one I am sure that will be attractive to couples. The long-term plan is to use the District Court which is undergoing a £500,000 extensive refurbishment.”

Currently weddings are held in the marriage suite located in the Council’s West Stewart Street offices in Greenock. These are scheduled to close at the end of September when Safer Communities relocate to the former Education headquarters in William Street.

Registrars currently officiate at around 80 weddings per year and in 2016 half of them took place at West Stewart Street.

Councillor McCabe added: “The Council has a legal requirement to be able to provide a wedding ‘celebrant’ and a venue from within its Registration Office. Our plan is to use the District Court as a dedicated location for weddings once it is complete but in the meantime I think the Provost’s room offers a prestigious and highly suitable alternative in the short-term.”

Ceremonies will be timed so they do not coincide with the Provost’s appointments or with Committee and Council meetings.

A wedding for up to a dozen guests plus the couple Monday to Thursday will be offered for £211.50 and £235 on a Friday in line with current charges.

The potential use – and costs – of the Provost’s Room on a weekend will be examined given that the Municipal Buildings will be require to be specifically opened up for the event.
