The town has been rated fifth best in the second Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards based on ratings submitted with passenger reviews on the Cruise Critic website.

It was only beaten by Amsterdam, Cobh (for Cork), Lisbon and St Peter Port in Guernsey in the category ‘British Isles and Western Europe’.

Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said: “This is excellent news and confirms our position as the cruise capital of Scotland. Passengers have taken on board and into their hearts the warm welcome they are given and also recognise the natural beauty and rich heritage of Inverclyde.

“Every year we see more and bigger ships coming alongside in Greenock which is great for the local economy and a boost to the wider tourism industry in Scotland.”

Adam Coulter, UK editor, Cruise Critic: “Greenock itself is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is also the gateway to Glasgow, making it ideal for those who’d like to explore the surrounding area.

“Cruise Critic members calling at Greenock praised the beautiful scenery, with passengers enjoying excursions to attractions, such as Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle, and Glasgow City.”
