Payment of Business Rates
Payment Options
Inverclyde Council offers a wide choice of business rates payment methods. While the Council prefers businesses to pay using direct debit we also offer other methods. To switch to paying by direct debit please complete and return the mandate enclosed with your bill.
The options offered by the Council are:
- Direct Debit - we recommend direct debit as the most efficient and cost effective way to pay your business rates, deductions will be made from your bank or building society account on the 7th of each month.
- On-line at https://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/pay-it-online
- Standing Order (Sort Code 80-91-25, Account Number 00438683)
- By Post: Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Greenock, PA15 1LY
- At any Bank (some banks may charge for this service);
- In person at any of the Council Offices shown on the reverse of your bill or
- By telephoning 01475 712590 or 0845 309 6062 (automated payment line) with your debit or credit card details.
When are payments due?
Payments must be made either:
- In 10 monthly instalments on the 7th of each month from May to February;
- One annual payment on or before 30 September.
What happens if your payments fall behind?
As soon as you realise you have a problem paying your bill you should talk to the Council; you may be entitled to a reduction in your bill, for example, through the Small Business Bonus Scheme. The Council may also be able to help you by rescheduling your payments. Please remember that if we do not know you are having problems paying, we cannot help you and instead may be forced to take action to recover the amount you owe us. We will take your personal circumstances into account.
If you miss or are late with an instalment, a reminder will be issued requesting that you bring your account up to date. Should you fail to pay at least 40% of your annual charge by 30 September a final notice will be issued. You must then pay the full year charge within 14 days of receipt of this. If you fail to do this, the Council will apply to the Sheriff Court for a Summary Warrant, which when granted, will result in a 10% penalty being added to your balance. This will then be passed to Alex M Adamson, Sheriff Officers for enforcement and may result in further costs being imposed.
