Scottish Paintings
19th century Scottish artists in the collection include works by Hugh William Williams (1773-1829), Horatio McCulloch (1805-1867), Waller Hugh Paton (1828-1895) and Thomas Fairbairn (1820-1844). Of particular note is the group of seven paintings by William McTaggart (displayed on their own page) and works by Robert Inerarity Herdman (1829-1888).
Other artists in the collection include Sir William Quiller Orchardson (1832-1910), John Pettie (1839-1893), William Strang (1859-1921), James Lawton Wingate (1846-1924), Robert Gemmell Hutchison (1855-1936) and John McGhie (1867-1952). There is also a significant group of works in the collection by the Glasgow Boys with paintings and drawings by Sir David Young Cameron (1865-1945), David Gauld (1865-1936), Sir James Guthrie (1859-1930), George Henry (1858-1943), Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), Arthur Melville (1858-1904), James Paterson (1854-1932) and Robert Macaulay Stevenson (1854-1952).
There are many fine works from the 20th century by George Smith (1870-1934), John Guthrie Spence Smith (1880-1951), Muirhead Bone (1876-1953), John Duncan (1865-1945), George Houston (1869-1947), Robert Gemmell Hutchison (1855-1936) and James Kay (1858-1942). The post Second World War period is also well represented with works from Stanley Cursiter (1887-1976), John MacLauchlan Milne (1885-1957), Alberto Morrocco (1917-1998), James McIntosh Patrick (1907-1998), Anne Redpath (1895-1965), Robert Sivel (1888-1958), Mary Nicol Neill Armour (1902-2000), Robert Henderson Blyth (1919-1970), William Crosbie (1915-1999), James William Hunter Cumming (1922-1990), David Ewart (1901-1965), William Russell Flint (1880-1969), William George Gillies (1898-1973) and Alexander Goudie (1933-2004).
