Friends, neighbours and anyone else who knew Margaret Fleming are being asked to get in touch with the Significant Case Review into her life.

The review is now asking members of the community who may have known Margaret or who may have knowledge of the circumstances of her life to get in touch.

Professor Jean MacLellan OBE chair of the Significant Case Review, said: “At the heart of the Significant Case review is a young woman from within our community and it is to that community we are seeking information.

“We have already identified a number of people who knew Margaret either personally or professionally and we have spoken to several of those contacts to date.

“We want to go further. So we would like to hear from you if you know about Margaret and what her life was like.”

The review was commissioned by Inverclyde Adult Protection Committee which was chaired by Alex Davidson.

He said: “There’s no one that can’t be touched by the story of Margaret Fleming. If you knew her we want to hear from you to support the work of the Significant Case review. You may have recollections as a member of her extended family.  We know that friends from her Primary School have recently erected a bench in her memory who may wish to say more. She also attended secondary school locally and Further Education College. You may know her from that time. She lived at several different addresses.

“You may have met her and can recall what she was like. Or you may have encountered her with her carers. Whatever the context, memories and recollections are welcome.”

People can contact the Significant Case Review by visiting the website https://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/sites/margaret-fleming (link included on this page) where a dedicated email account has been created.

Margaret went missing in October 2016 and was subject to an extensive missing person investigation.

Her carers Avril Jones and Edward Cairney were arrested and subsequently charged with her murder.

They were convicted of her murder in June 2019 at the High Court in Glasgow. Following their conviction a Significant Case Review was established chaired by Professor Jean MacLellan OBE.

The review was delayed due to pressure on services during the first year of the Covid Pandemic.  Now it has been re-started and is aiming to report in summer 2022.
