Kilmacolm primary opened
The latest Inverclyde primary schools upgrade has been officially opened.
For, Kilmacolm Primary School has beenopened by Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, after a £4.4m refurbishment.
Speaking at the official opening, Councillor McCabe said: “It is a great honour to officially open – or more precisely re-open – the newly refurbished Kilmacolm Primary School.
“This marks another milestone in the journey towards our goal of every young person in Inverclyde learning in a new or fully refurbished school by 2020. We still have some way to go on that journey but we have a clear and costed plan to get there.
“This year alone should see work start on major refurbishments of Moorfoot and Lady Alice Primary Schools, a new building for St Ninian’s Primary School, the refurbishment of Bluebird Family Centre, a new home for Glenbrae Children’s Centre in the refurbished Aberfoyle Road building and a new build early years facility for the west end of Greenock on the site of the former Greenock Academy.
“The opening of a new school is an opportunity to thank the many people who work hard to deliver a project of this scale. That includes a range of council services, partners in the community and, of course, our pupils, parents and school staff. Any work on a school causes some disruption, but I believe the disruption was worth it and that we can now look forward with confidence to Kilmacolm Primary School serving the communities of Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village for at least another 40 years.”
The original school building, which was built in 1887 at a cost of £4,000, was then replaced in 1974 at a cost of £230,500.
The current refurbishment project at Kilmacolm Primary School began on October 2015 and was completed in October 2016.
