Recycling Centres – Commercial Vehicle use

Commercial vehicles may only use Pottery Street Recycling Centre.

Commercial vehicles used by residents need to book in advance by calling 01475 717171 or speaking to a member of staff onsite at Pottery Street. This will enable us to safely manage the number of commercial vehicles using the centre.  Please note entry will be refused if you have not booked in advance.

The total weight of the commercial vehicle must be less than 3.5 tonnes. If you intend to use a Luton van or tipper, you should obtain authorisation from a Council Officer prior to visiting the site; otherwise, you will be refused entry.

Commercial vehicles and trailers are not permitted at Craigmuschat Quarry. Due to their size, it is not feasible to allow commercial vehicles onsite at this location. This site is also not licensed to accept commercial, trade or business waste. Commercial vehicles must therefore book into Pottery Street as above.

A fair usage policy is in operation at the Household Recycling Centre which will allow households to access the site up to 12 times a year. Visits to the site are by appointment only for trailers & Commercial vehicle users and must be booked in advance.

Limiting the amount of visits will help ensure that council tax payers are not footing the bill for those who are disposing of commercial waste illegally, or those who are disposing of excessive amounts of waste on a regular basis.

Craigmuschat Quarry

For Health and Safety reasons whilst the skip vehicle is onsite, no members of the public are permitted within the site.

You may be requested to wait on the hill at Craigmuschat Quarrywhen the skip vehicle is onsite to make skip exchanges or a maximum of 6 cars are onsite.

Waste Inspection

  • If you are refused permission to tip and continue to tip, we can search for vehicle the details of the keeper of the vehicle via DVLA and a charge will be applied to the keeper of the vehicle who will also be reported to the police/SEPA.
  • The Council reserves the right to undertake investigations relating to the waste which is presented at the HWRC and to restrict access if false or inaccurate information is provided to Council staff or through the online booking service.

DIY Waste

  • DIY waste (or construction and demolition waste) is large amounts of waste generated through building or renovation work in your home or garden.
  • By law, waste types, such as DIY waste, that you may produce through building or renovation work in your home or garden are classed as 'non-household waste' and the Council may not accept this type of waste free of charge.  Clarification regarding the disposal of waste should be sought by contacting Pottery Street or Waste Strategy at Ingleston Park during office hours.
  • You should look at private hire skips for this type of project to deal with the large amounts of waste involved.

Monitoring at the Recycling Centres

  • Commercial, trade and business waste illegally entering recycling centres puts a burden on local council taxpayers.  Commercial misuse also impacts on our ability to provide efficient services.  In turn, it is important to monitor and control the use of these facilities.
  • We have installed Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology at our Pottery Street site; this captures the registration numbers of vehicles entering our sites.  High usage will be monitored along with any unusual activity.
  • A Household Waste declaration form should be completed by the site user, if the staff are uncertain about the origins of the waste. To do this you must provide proof of address e.g. council tax bill or driving licence.  The information provided on these forms may be investigated.
  • All waste brought into HWRC should originate from within Inverclyde.

ID requirements

  • You will need to bring photographic ID and proof of residency e.g., a Council tax or utility bill, when visiting the site.
  • Failure to produce these documents may result in refusal to deposit waste.
