Asia
China
The collection contains a wide range of objects from various periods of Chinese history from the sixteenth century onwards. It includes personal and domestic items, weapons, musical instruments, textiles and items made for export to the West in the nineteenth century. Of particular note are the 17th century Kang Xi period fire screen and a pair of Sino-Tibetan metal bodhisattva figures.
South and East Asia
The South Asia and South East Asia collection contains items from Pakistan, India (including the Andaman Islands), Sri Lanka, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. The collection contains a wide range of material including paintings, carvings, weapons, figurines and religious items, including marble Buddhas from Burma (Myanmar).
Japan
The collection contains Japanese items from the 16th century onwards. It includes armour, swords and sword fittings, lances and other military items, ceramics, inro, lacquer work, netsuke, printed items, wood carvings, equestrian items and costume. The majority of the items in this collection were gifted by George Rodgers Macdougall (1843-1917), an important figure in the development of the Museum and in the cultural development of the Inverclyde area. The collection contains within it several smaller collections such as the netsuke, inro and tsuba collections.
