The Home Front 1914-1918

The First World War placed unprecedented demands on the civilian population. The scale, length and cost of the conflict meant that the Government had to persuade the civilian population to contribute money, accept food controls and alter many other aspects of their daily lives to support the British war effort.

Many different campaigns were mounted to encourage participation. In the field of fund raising campaigns were mounted to encourage the purchase of war bonds and various other forms of Government debt as well as more specific fundraising efforts such as War Weapons Week.
