Disability Living Allowance for Children / Child Disability Payment

 

Disability Living Allowance for children provides money for extra costs of looking after a child who:

  • is under 16
  • has difficulties walking or needs much more looking after than a child of the same age who does not have a disability.

The current DLA rate is between £23.60 and £151.40 per week dependant on the level of help the child needs.

How to apply:

To claim DLA for a child you need to be their parent or look after them as if you're their parent. To apply you can either:

  • Print off and fill in the DLA claim form (this can be found under the "Documents" section of this webpage).
  • Phone the Disability Living Allowance helpline on 0800 121 4600 and ask for a printed form.

Child Disability Payment

In the future, payment of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children in Scotland will transfer from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to Social Security Scotland.

A new benefit called Child Disability Payment will replace DLA for children in Scotland. There will be no change to the amount you are paid.

Children and young people in Scotland will continue to get Child Disability Payment until they are 18.

DWP will contact you before your child turns 16. If your child is currently in receipt of DLA for children you will receive a letter from DWP about 5 months before their 16th birthday. This will let you know that Social Security Scotland will take over payment of their award in 2020 or 2021.
