32 groups share over £70k

OVER 30 Inverclyde community and sports groups have been awarded a share of more than £70,000 by the council.

The local authority has approved the final round of funding from its Grants to Voluntary Organisations (GTVO) and Under-19s funds for the 2020/21 financial year.

A total of 32 groups, including sports teams, drama clubs and music bands, have secured a share of £70,665 across both pots.

It takes Inverclyde Council’s GTVO and U19s funding to just under £300k in the last year alone.

Among the 28 groups sharing just over £66k from the GTVO fund are: Inverclyde Family Contact Centre, which received £5k towards Covid-19 cleaning, personal protective equipment (PPE) and overheads; the Inverclyde branch of Victim Support Scotland, which has been awarded £3,500 to support rental, admin and volunteer costs; and Riverside Youth Band, which is being given £2,200 to help with online video production, tutoring and competition charges.

Four grants worth a total of £4,648 have been awarded to Clydeside Athletic FC, Greenock Morton Hockey Club, Inverclyde Amateur Swimming Club and Port Glasgow Junior Community Sports Club for a variety of pitch hire fees and additional covid-related costs.

Councillor Graeme Brooks, chair of Inverclyde Council’s grants sub-committee, said: “We have a wealth of community and voluntary groups across Inverclyde delivering important activities and events to people of all ages.

“Many of them have been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic so it’s important we do all we can to support them through these difficult times and help them prepare for getting back on their feet once it’s safe to do so.

“This latest round of grants will do just that and we can all look forward to better times ahead in the not too distant future.”
