Grass & Bed Maintenance

Coronavirus Update

Please note that we only recently re-started cutting grass (grass cutting was not permitted during the height of the pandemic) and we are still supporting refuse collection operations by providing grounds labour.  Unfortunately, we are not back up to full strength and consequently our usual 2 weekly cutting cycle is not being achieved.  First cuts on long grass may look unsightly and areas won’t be back to normal until after several visits (it is not our normal practice to lift cut grass).  Please bear with us as we try to catch up with limited resources.

Inverclyde Council’s Grounds Maintenance service is responsible for the maintenance of grass and flower/shrub beds in public open spaces and public parks.  Grassed areas will be cut regularly to a high standard between March and October (subject to weather conditions).  Certain grassed areas will be kept long where bulbs have been have been planted and will remain uncut until mid-June to ensure the plants flower the following season.

Our trained grounds staff also carry out our summer bedding programmes to ensure that our ornamental bedding displays are maintained to a high standard throughout the district.

Please note that Inverclyde Council is only responsible for maintaining public open space grass areas, other grass areas within housing schemes or business parks may be the responsibility of a housing association, factor or private business. Please check with your housing association or factor when making an enquiry about grounds maintenance in your area.

Weed Control

The Grounds Maintenance service sprays weedkiller on grass edges and around obstacles on grass plots.  Weedkiller is sprayed on 2-3 occasions between May and October.

Please note that grounds maintenance is not responsible for other general weed growth, weed killing on public roads and footpaths is carried out between the months of April and October, by a private contractor, on behalf of Inverclyde Council Environmental & Commercial Services (Roads).

Winter Maintenance

During the winter period we will undertake a programme of works to ensure a high standard of bed maintenance throughout the district, including pruning shrub beds, planting spring bedding and reforming grass edges where necessary.
