Council tax scam alert

Residents in Inverclyde are being warned to be careful of a council tax scam.
Inverclyde Council officers have been alerted to a scam by colleagues in Ayrshire and by Inverclyde residents.
Residents are being targeted to give financial information with the offer of getting council tax reductions.
Now, the Council is urging people to steer clear of the scammers and to contact the council’s customer services if they want to find out more about council tax reductions.
Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, warned: “Residents should be on the lookout for cold calls and emails claiming to offer a council tax refund. This is a scam, pure and simple. If you get a call or an email from anyone claiming they can get you a council tax discount, don’t respond to it.”
The scam is believed to be doing the rounds in the wake of the recent Scottish Government council tax changes which saw bands E-H properties increase across Scotland.
And Councillor McCabe urged residents affected by the Council Tax changes to avoid scammers and check with the council to find out if they are eligible for a council tax reduction.
He said: “While the increased bills for higher band properties for council tax may create some anxiety for householders, I would urge residents to steer well clear of anyone offering to get you a council tax reduction or discount. No matter how plausible they seem, there’s only one place to find out for sure if you are eligible and that’s through the Council’s customer services team or by visiting the council tax reductions page on the council website.”
Advice for residents who receive an email offering a council tax refund and asking them to provide bank account details by clicking on a link is to ignore it and delete the email.
And, for residents who are cold-called and asked to provide bank details to receive a council tax refund or reduction, the advice is to ignore the request and hang up.
If you want to find out about council tax reductions, visit the ‘Council Tax reduction, discounts and exemptions’ page on this website which includes useful information and guidance.
