#BeCourteous Campaign
Inverclyde Council have worked to increase levels of active travel within our community by creating cycle lanes and shared use paths. These pathways are well utilised by locals and visitors to the area, however, there has been feedback from users highlighting some issues between cyclists and pedestrians using these shared areas. This feedback sparked a campaign to encourage smart and courteous behaviours, that allow active travel users in our community to travel safely.
Inverclyde Council have launched a campaign, #BeCourteous, highlighting some of the issues and encouraging everyone to be mindful of other users. The campaign will harness the reach of social media to communicate with audiences throughout Inverclyde over the next four weeks, using a specially created short film. This campaign is funded by Smarter Places, Smarter Choices from Paths for All.
Inverclyde is very fortunate to have a network of shared use paths that allow everyone to enjoy some of the scenic beauty spots in the area. These paths are for the use of everyone and whether you walk, cycle, run or walk your dog - it is vital that everyone within our community can safely use these paths alongside one another. Inverclyde Council hopes that the message will be heard loud and clear throughout the community - #BeCourteous to one another and enjoy the beauty Inverclyde has to offer!
Recent changes to the Highway Code
In 2022 significant changes were made to the Highway Code that now includes guidance on:
- when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way
- people cycling should be courteous to other people on shared use paths
- people walking should also take care not to obstruct or endanger
